Volleyball splits weekend

The Dragon volleyball team split their weekend matches yet again, but ended on a high note this time. They fell to Winona (Minn.) State University 3-0 on Friday before topping Upper Iowa, Fayette, 3-1 on Saturday.

The Dragons were led by junior libero Katy Ness with 23 digs, but the other liberos contributed as well, as sophomore Angie Waller and freshman Sam Reilly chipped in 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Offensively, the Dragons were led by their freshmen outside hitters, as Annie Palmquist and Morgan Gradishar combined for 17 kills.

Junior Anna Olson led the Dragon setters with 16 assists, followed by freshman Sam Sullivan with 10 assists.

The Dragons bounced back from their tough loss to defeat the Peacocks of Upper Iowa to close out the 2011 regular season.

Olson led the team offensively, recording 40 assists, seven kills and five digs.

Junior middle blocker Meredith Egeland also contributed in a big way with 11 kills and five block assists.

Other key contributors for the Dragons were junior outside hitter Heidi Lensing with nine kills and 12 digs, Gradishar with nine kills and eight digs, and Ness with 24 digs.

The Dragons (13-14 overall, 11-9 in the NSIC) finished their season ranked sixth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
